Play Coins are earned by walking around with your Nintendo 3DS, this promotes people taking their system out with them so StreetPass and SpotPass can be utilised more. Play Coins can be used in a variety of ways throughout the Nintendo 3DS system depending on the game or application.
100 steps will earn you a single Play Coin and you can only earn 10 Play Coins per day, on top of that your Nintendo 3DS can only store 300 Play Coins at once.
Play Coins can be freely used by developers as they wish, in Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars you can purchase additional content with Play Coins while Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition will allow you to gamble with them in the hope of earning a new Battle Figure.
